What is the TechGirls program about?
TechGirls is not just another exchange program; it is a life-changing experience for young women between the ages of 15 and 17. This U.S.-based initiative is designed to empower and support these talented girls from various corners of the world in pursuing higher education and careers in STEM fields. Through hands-on skills development training, mentoring, and a dynamic four-week U.S.-based exchange, TechGirls aims to bridge the gender gap in STEM.
In 2024, this program will be supporting 111 young women from 37 participating countries and territories, along with over 13 peers from the United States. This is not just a one-time experience; it's a seven-month journey that includes pre-and post-exchange mentoring. Since its inception in 2012, TechGirls has nurtured and guided 653 teenage girls on their STEM journeys.
Originally focusing on countries in the Middle East and North Africa, TechGirls expanded its horizons in the summer of 2022, engaging bright young minds from all six regions of the world - Western Hemisphere, Sub-Saharan Africa, Europe and Eurasia, East Asia Pacific, Middle East and North Africa, and South and Central Asia.
The Core of TechGirls
At the heart of the TechGirls program lies a transformative 24-day experience in the United States. In partnership with Virginia Tech, the participants engage in an interactive tech camp that provides them with an in-depth understanding of cutting-edge technologies and various educational and professional paths in STEM fields.
But it doesn't end there. Following the camp, TechGirls embark on a journey to different cities in the USA, including Austin, Chicago, Cincinnati, Denver, Detroit, or Seattle. This part of the program involves community immersion and STEM career exploration. The ripple effect is significant as the participants return home, equipped with knowledge and experience, and go on to conduct community-based projects with seven months of mentorship.
TechGirls serves as a powerful catalyst in connecting and supporting the next generation of women leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It offers them access and opportunities to advance their skills and pursue their dreams.
Eligibility and Application
The 2024 TechGirls application is now open and will close on December 8, 2023, at 12:00 PM (noon) ET. The selection process is rigorous and impartial, with independent selection committees made up of industry leaders and regional experts. For international semi-finalists, U.S. embassy personnel in the host country/territory of permanent residence conduct interviews, while U.S. semi-finalists are interviewed by Legacy International.
To be eligible, students must meet the following criteria:
- Citizenship in one of the eligible countries/territories.
- Aged between 15 and 17 at the start of the exchange.
- A demonstrated interest in STEM fields.
- Intent to pursue higher education and/or careers in STEM.
- Strong English language skills.
- Maturity, flexibility, and open-mindedness.
- Commitment to completing a community-based project upon their return home.
- Meeting U.S. J-1 visa eligibility requirements.
