Are you a recent graduate or student who is passionate about changing the world for the better? If so, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) presents a special chance for you to participate in their important work and get worthwhile experience. The goal of IOM's paid internship program is to study and develop while actually making a difference in the subject of migration. It goes beyond simple knowledge acquisition.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) may hold the key to the solution. Not only do they provide internships, but they also provide you the opportunity to become a part of something greater, immerse yourself in the world of migration, and be given opportunities and duties that align with your abilities. IOM is changing the game in an industry where boring jobs and coffee runs frequently characterize internships.
The Program for Paid Internships at IOM
The IOM Paid Internships Program is intended to give graduates and students the opportunity to gain real-world experience in migration, acquire employable skills, and establish connections with a global network of scholars and experts. Interns at IOM are given important responsibilities that are in line with their educational and professional qualifications rather than being limited to office work or coffee runs.
As an intern, you will be working closely with highly experienced professionals under the direction of a committed supervisor. This mentoring program makes sure you have the tools and resources you need to succeed and leave a lasting impression.
Diverse Internship Opportunities
IOM welcomes hundreds of interns to work within its offices worldwide, making it a truly global experience. The internships are categorized into three main areas:
1. Internships in IOM Headquarters (Geneva): If you're interested in the inner workings and global policies related to migration, the headquarters in Geneva is the place to be.
2. Internships in IOM Field Missions: For those who prefer hands-on experience in the field and want to directly engage with migrants and their communities, field missions offer unique opportunities.
3. Internships in IOM Country Offices: If you wish to work in a specific country, you can apply directly to the IOM Country Office of your choice. The experience in these offices can be particularly enriching, as it allows you to contribute to IOM's work on the ground and engage with local communities.

Application Process and Eligibility
One of the best things about IOM's internship program is that there is no specific time of the year for sending your application. You can register by submitting your profile whenever you are ready. Make sure to "release" your profile within the system for review. If you have a scholarship or your internship is a mandatory requirement for your studies, mention this in your cover letter along with the proposed internship dates and attach a letter from your sponsor or university.
To be eligible for IOM-paid internships, you must meet one of the following criteria:
Enrolled in the final academic year of a university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent).
Enrolled in a graduate degree program (second university degree or higher).
Recently graduated with a university or graduate degree and can commence the internship within one year of graduation.
Sponsored by a governmental/non-governmental institution and/or academic institution to work in an area relevant to both IOM and the sponsor institution.
Interns should also be between 19 and 36 years of age, with a working knowledge of at least one of IOM's official languages (English, French, or Spanish).

Duration and Compensation
IOM internships are flexible, lasting from two to six months, with a preference for interns who can commit to at least six months. The maximum duration is nine months. Most interns receive a monthly subsistence allowance (MSA) to help cover accommodation and living expenses. However, there are exceptions, such as when IOM collaborates with a university or an intern receives funding through their institution. In certain cases, the Director of Human Resources can waive the MSA for local interns.
Health Insurance and Safety
IOM prioritizes the well-being of its interns. All interns, regardless of their location, are covered against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Organization's Compensation Plan (CP) insurance. If you're not a national of the country where you'll be working, you must have valid medical insurance coverage, including evacuation and repatriation coverage, for the entire internship period. Locally recruited interns who are nationals of the host country must also have valid medical insurance coverage.
In addition to insurance, all interns must provide a medical certificate of good health and their vaccination records before starting their internship to ensure the safety and health of everyone involved.
Whether you're passionate about policy, fieldwork, or community engagement, there's a place for you within IOM. Don't hesitate to explore your potential and contribute to a brighter future for migrants around the world.
