Main duties of the job
 

As a Registered Midwife you will be responsible for ensuring that our service users’ needs are met through the delivery of high-quality care. You will offer a person-centred approach to antenatal care and subsequent care during the intrapartum and postnatal period.
 
The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care. Assist the mother and her family to realise their expectations. Is expected to carry out all relevant forms of care and actively work towards achieving the competencies outlined in the midwifery scale. Rotate to night
 
duty and all areas in the Maternity Services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Deliver clinical care as outlined in the clinical section of the job description.

  • Actively work towards outlined competencies of Band 6 midwives.

  • Rotate within the maternity unit as per developmental plan.

  • Ensure orientation plan is completed.

Clinical
 
To plan, implement and evaluate with the mother, antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care for the mother and her baby ensuring this is carried out by the midwife or other allocated staff.
 
Ensure care is contemporary, evidence based and equitable that encompasses spiritual and cultural beliefs and reflects the needs of a diverse society.

Communication
 
To ensure that all relevant information with due regard to the mother’s wishes in respect of personal information is entered in the mother’s / baby’s care plan and keep all observations charts up to date.
 
To ensure that staff receive reports on condition and treatment of mothers/babies, inclusive of current changes.

Education
 
To assist with and participate in in-service training and induction programmes, as relevant.
 
To co-operate and liaise with Midwifery Lecturers in the interest of Midwifery Education.

Organisational
 
Discuss work load with colleagues and bring to the Senior Midwife’s attention without delay factors impacting on the safe care of mothers and babies. To report to the Senior Midwife when service needs cannot be met, suggesting safe alternatives.
 
To participate in compiling off duty rotas and be responsible for arranging adequate cover in cases of absence or sudden illness when in charge of a clinical area either in the hospital or community.

Knowledge/Skills

Essential criteria
 

  • • Organisational skills and the ability to work effectively within a management structure

  • • Effective communicator and team player

  • • Basic IT skills

  • • Working knowledge of NMC The Code (2015)

  • • PREPP in relation to midwifery

  • • Willingness to be involved in audit and other projects undertaken by the Trust

  • • Knowledge of clinical governance

  • • Working knowledge of the Public Health role of the midwife including: Child Protection, Domestic Abuse, Substance Misuse Mental Health, Healthy Weight Management

  • • Working knowledge of NMC Midwives Rules and Standards (2012)
