Our Maternity Support Workers are integral in our transformation plans to meet the targets set by the Maternity Transformation Plan. We are looking for enthusiastic and flexible people to rotate around the acute setting as well as the opportunity to work in the Community Teams in the future. You should be able to work a 24 hour shift pattern. The health Care certificate will be needed for this role. The successful applicants will be responsible for supporting the midwifery team in delivering high standards of care to these families and their new born babies. You will be given opportunities to develop the skills required for this interesting and varied role, including the skills required for antenatal and intrapartum care as we develop the role of our Maternity Support Workers further, with particular focus on intrapartum care. Our Maternity Services in Cornwall have recently been transformed with national recognition which we are immensely proud of. As a result, we have had overwhelming executive support to progress our strategy for our Maternity Transformation agenda. We are now looking for enthusiastic Maternity Support Workers to join our fabulous team to support our vision.

This post will be Band 2 until the competency pack is completed andthen the successful applicant will move to Band 3.

Main duties of the job

Assist and support midwifery staff with clinical duties. To establish a rapport with mothers and their families and an awareness of the individual woman's needs, ensuring these are communicated to the midwife.

To assist women to maintain their personal hygiene and appearance following delivery, demonstrating an awareness of their clinical condition and the individual's right to privacy and personal preference. Make a written record on appropriate record charts to any changes in skin appearance, and bodily functions and report the same to the Registered Midwife responsible for the patient.

To assist women with eating and drinking, ensuring they receive appropriate diet and fluids as indicated by their physical condition and personal/cultural preferences.

Ensure any intake records are completed in a timely and accurate manner, and report any changes/difficulties to the Registered Midwife responsible for the patient.

Be able to work as a team member.

To perform clerical duties as designated by the Ward Manager.

Provide support with infant feeding, in line with Trust and Unicef baby friendly policies.

Undertake procedures, following appropriate training and assessment, such as urinalysis and blood pressure monitoring.

Provide support with basic routine care of babies and be able to teach new parents the care of the new born.

Job responsibilities
 

 
To carry out such additional tasks as delegated by the Registered Midwife and once appropriate training has been given such as; undertake venepuncture, cord blood gas analysis, neonatal heel prick sampling, blood glucose monitoring in woman and neonates and be able to complete all the relevant paperwork, and inform the midwife of findings.
 
Additional Delivery Suite duties include circulating in theatre, packing instruments and arranging for sterilisation.
 
To provide intrapartum support to women and their families in all birth settings, respecting the individual choices that are made by the woman
 
To utilise skills required to be with woman in the birth setting and employadditional skills with training given
 
Assist midwives and obstetrician with the setting up of equipment for deliveries and suturing.
 
Have an awareness of the needs and emotions of parents whose baby have died.
 
Assist with preparation and organisation of antenatal and gynaecology clinics and act as a chaperone.
 
Be able to use the hospital computer information system and to be proficient in reading and sending e mails.
 
Organise appointments, ultrasound scans, investigations and obtain laboratory results.
 
Other general clerical duties such as use of the phone and filling reports.
 
To maintain the confidentiality policy of the Trust and matters relating to patients and the unit.
 
Contribute to the Health and Safety of the hospital environment and all those who use its facilities.
 
Advise the person in charge of any untoward incidents or problems relating to women in the environment.
 
Remain courteous to patients and visitors in the clinical environment.
 
Carry out tasks designated by the Ward/Department Sister to support the smooth running of the ward/department
