We are looking for a Lead Character Artist to join our PlayStation first-party studio. This is a unique opportunity to be at the heart of crafting and bringing to life the next PlayStation icon/s. You will have a meaningful role to play in creating, shaping, and directing the characters that come to life in our worlds. The right artist has a passion for crafting iconic characters, whilst building, mentoring and encouraging a team of artists. This role will involve leading all aspects of producing striking high quality and optimized AAA characters.

Scope of Work

  • Be the artistic leader and take ownership for delivering high quality, distinction, and style for our game characters.

  • Improve hands-on delivery of quality character prototypes and benchmarks to a superb level of skill and ability.

  • Maintain areas of the project’s style guide, which relate to the aesthetic and technical implementation of character assets.

  • Proactively contribute to driving the department and studio to the forefront of pioneering Games development.

  • Work with the Animation, Technical Art, and Technology teams to define the character tools and pipeline, including establishing technical standards, and best methodologies.

  • Work closely with art leadership and production to keep Character art on schedule and scope for all studio productions.

  • Collaborate with Art Management to build, source and extend our team with global AAA talent. Helping support and train our external partners, whilst reviewing and ensuring ultimate quality.

Experience / Knowledge

  • Experience developing digital characters in a variety of styles.

  • Experience in defining and being responsible for the technical and budgetary requirements for character art production, delivering on specification and to deadline.

  • Experience leading an internal and external art team.

  • You display a mastery of anatomy, sculpting and texturing.

  • Excellent knowledge of real-time modelling techniques (Shaders, PBR, Normal, Displacement, etc.)

  • Solid knowledge of Maya, Photoshop, Zbrush and Substance Painter.

  • You can arbitrate sensitively between creative desires and production requirements.

This role is uniquely placed for an experienced Character Artist to be at the forefront of character creative, development, and technology, but it’s about truly building an elite character team internally and amongst our external partners.

Supervision

In this role you will be expected to build out our Character Art team, so we need someone who is a self-starter and a great teammate. We are hoping you are the type of Manager who leads, constantly wants to improve, and can empower and steer a team.
