Responsibilities:

• Leading the development of new hybrids and collaborating on parent line development with the Senior Wheat Breeder, under the direction of the Senior Wheat Breeder and Regional Breeding Lead.

• Involvement in all technical aspects of the hybrid wheat breeding and selection program such as design and oversight of plot trials, disease nurseries, hybrid production, early generation selection, data analysis and contribution to reporting of results in consultation with key staff such as agronomists and maintenance breeders.

• Maintain current knowledge of scientific literature relevant to breeding and genetic improvement of crops especially relevant to wheat and/or hybrids to drive ongoing innovation and refinement of breeding strategies.

• Supervise and develop direct reports at the Pike Lake Wheat Breeding Station.

• Occasional travel to assist with breeding program activities at other trial locations may be required at various times throughout the year

Qualifications

Formula for Success

• PhD (or Bachelor’s degree or Masters degree and equivalent experience)

• At least 5 years working in a wheat breeding program, or hybrid breeding program for other crops

• Experience in all aspects of plant breeding including designing crosses and selection schemes, selecting breeding populations using agronomic, disease, grain quality and molecular data

• Design of field trials, analysis and reporting of data on selection decisions.

• Production of wheat hybrids in small plots

• Good self-organization and planning skills

• Ability to prepare reports for management on performance of new wheat lines and hybrids.

• Ability to work as part of a team to design and establish yield trials, experimental hybrid productions blocks, disease nurseries, crossing plans and early generation selection schemes.

• Ability to collect data in electronic form, transfer to the program database and perform data analysis independently and in collaboration with biometricians

Willing to travel to trial locations to assist the Canadian Wheat Breeding team to assist with all aspects of operation of the breeding program
