Are you looking for an opportunity to work with a diverse group of cancer patients as part of an established team? We are looking for a Band 2 Healthcare Assistant to work with us on Wilson Ward at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea. Wilson Ward is a mixed gender surgical ward; however, we also provide care to medical patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy and palliative care treatments.

The post we are offering is at Band 2 level and therefore the ideal candidate may be an entry level health care assistant who is willing to learn a new skillset in both a challenging yet rewarding environment. The post holder will need the ability to work closely within a team and provide support for nurses, healthcare assistants and other allied health professionals. It is essential the candidate has good communication skills with patients and staff including excellent verbal and written English. Candidates for this role will be expected to complete their Care Certificates.

Main duties of the job

To carry out in a responsible and efficient way, the nursing care for patients which has been drawn up in conjunction with the co-ordinator of the shift.

To demonstrate the ability to develop a greater awareness and understanding of the needs of patients with cancer and the different treatment modalities.

As an integral member of the nursing team work with team members to ensure the maintenance of an efficient, safe, clean and pleasant environment for all patients.

These responsibilities will be carried out under the guidance of the shift co-ordinator.
 
Clinical Responsibility Patient Care
 
To undertake and practice the Care Certificate standards.
 
Monitor and record patients vital signs (including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, oxygensaturation) and report any abnormal results to registered nursing staff.
 
Measure and record patients height and weight.
 
Perform venepuncture and venous blood sampling, following training and assessment.
 
Undertake clinical tasks relevant to the specific clinical area following competency sign off. For example, ECG; Urinalysis; MRSA screening swabs, recording of allergies on EPR and other clinical tasks where training/ competency sign off has been deemed appropriate for HCSW andhas been ratified through NRRAC.
 
Assist with nutrition where applicable (e.g. assisting with menu completion, feeding assistance) working closely with the ward host/hostess.
 
To demonstrate an understanding of infection control issues by attending mandatory training; understand infection control policy and procedure, accept responsibility for own infection control practice and be willing to challenge others practice.
 
Direct or escort patients and their belongings between departments and clinical areas.
 
To collect patients medications from pharmacy.Assist in the provision of basic care to patients so as to ensure their comfort, cleanliness and wellbeing (e.g. assist with mouth care, hygiene and eye care).
 
Report to registered nurses any problems arising during observation of or conversations with patients and carers.

Essential
 

  • Care Certificate - or the ability to attain the Care certificate within 12 weeks (if working 30 hrs or more) or 20 weeks (if working up to 30 hrs)

  • Demonstrable experience of working in a healthcare setting.

  • Understanding of working with patients who are critically and chronically ill.

  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
