Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Willink Biochemical Genetics Laboratory as a Biomedical Scientist or Specialist Biomedical Scientist in the Metabolites & newborn screening section. The laboratory specialises in the study of the biochemical defects of metabolic pathways using a number of complex analytical techniques. These include tandem mass spectrometry, gas chromatography mass spectrometry, high pressure liquid chromatography, thin-layer chromatography for metabolic profiling, and measurement of specific enzyme activities using fluorimetry or scintillation. The Willink Biochemical Genetics Laboratory is a major part of the Genomic Diagnostic Laboratory where genetic confirmation of the inherited metabolic diseases is also be provided.There is growing interest in study of inherited metabolic diseases. Over 700 disorders have been characterised and new disorders continue to be described. The Willink Biochemical Genetics Laboratory is one of very few laboratories in the UK offering this highly specialised metabolic service. The laboratory is also one of the largest Newborn Screening centres providing neonatal bloodspot screening for 6 metabolic conditions for approximately 55,000 babies each year. The laboratory primarily serves Manchester and the North West region but also has a national and international reputation receiving referrals from all over the UK and overseas.

Job responsibilities

Interested applicants should have good communication skills, able to work well in a team, remain calm under pressure and be able to prioritise their workload. Good IT skills and experience of using a number of different software packages are also required. Knowledge and experience of using Apex LIMS in a laboratory or equivalent system, Q-Pulse, Unity and middleware would also be advantageous. Candidates will be appointed to Band 5/6 dependent up on HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist and relevant experience. Candidates in the final year of a Biomedical Sciences degree or those currently completing additional modules are encouraged to apply.
